| Loving Lord We thank you for your love so freely given to us all. We pray for families around the world. Bless the work of the Mothers' Union as we seek to share your love through the encouragement, strengthening and support of marriage and family life. Empowered by your Spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship, and in love and service reach out as your hands across the world. In Jesus' name. Amen |

Mothers' Union tour of the great space at
Liverpool Cathedral Church of Christ
Despite a problem with the church minibus, Diane Johnson's organisation placed us all at the Cathedral's Western Rooms where we were served with a delightful meal.
We than travelled upstairs to the nave, and met our tour guides for the evening. In the presentation theatre we viewed a ten-minute high quality HD panoramic film flying over the city of Liverpool , and in to the cathedral, with a commentary immersing us in the people, the architecture, and the history of the building.
Moving out of the theatre to the Derby memorial we were shown the huge foundation stone of the cathedral, behind this lies the effigy of the Lord Derby who bought the ground to build the cathedral upon. Under his left shoulder there is a small recess where a bronze imitation mouse is hidden, it has been stroked so many times it is worn and shiny. I am sure a lot of us stroked it also. Above this is the whispering arch where a person at each end of the arch can whisper and hear each other.
We were shown the memorial stones holding the ashes of Bishop David Shepperd and Bishop Chevasse, the first bishop of Liverpool . Nearby we recognised a stone in the floor with the name of Canon Ellis, and his wife, of Prescot.
The Lady Chapel, my favourite, is the original first part of the cathedral to be used. The rerodos is very beautiful and interesting, depicting the life of Jesus; it is headed by a pelican and stands for maternal devotion. The windows in this chapel are of lay saints. Thirty-two angels represent psalm 150 with musical instruments. A memorial on the wall is dedicated to nurses during the war. A window shows distinctive ladies, such as Kitty Wilkinson who opened the first washhouses and taught women hygiene. Agnes Jones, a nurse and friend of Florence Nightingale, had a hospital built for the poor on the original ground of the Metropolitan Cathedral; unfortunately she caught a disease from one of the patients and died.
Moving on, to look at the high alter we realised just how awesome this building really is, the reredos, enclosing stations of the cross, figures of Jesus with eleven disciples are magnificent. The alter rails with ten lady figures representing the commandments. The bishop's throne faces the organ that is the largest in the country with 10,268 pipes. The Billy Fury lectern in the chancel. Looking upwards admiring the wonderful architecture makes one feel very proud to belong to this Cathedral.
The War Memorial Chapel contains a book of 40,000 names killed in the Great War from this area. Lord Kitchener's name is said to be here. The window of sacrifice, over the Alter, shows Nelson's death in one pane and around the reredos is a ring of animals of peace. High up in one of the smaller windows is the Prescot Crest.
When Sir Giles Gilbert, the architect, designed the Cathedral he asked that people look not at the stone, but at the space he had created.
We thanked our guide and made our way home satisfied after an enjoyable evening in the largest cathedral in the country.

Mothers' Union News
Well it's nearly the end of our spring programme, but first I must tell you what we have been doing. On 23 rd April we had a Hot Pot Supper to celebrate St. George's Day, Ray & Barbara Mercer provided the entertainment, which had a very patriotic theme – a good time was had by all.
On 14 th May we celebrated with other Mothers' Union members, from the Deanery, for our annual Deanery Festival that this year was held at Holy Spirit, Dovecot. Jonathan Stott is vicar at Holy Spirit and preached a meaningful sermon on the diversity of the work of the Mothers' Union . Incidentally, Jonathan is also a member of Mothers' Union – he was enrolled when his branch re-opened 2 years ago.
On 15 th May many members, including myself, had the privilege to meet Miss Margaret Lovett whose father had been a previous Vicar of Prescot, and whose Mother, Evelyn, had founded the Mothers' Union here in Prescot 79 years ago. We celebrated with a short service in Church, led by David Rose, followed by a wonderful afternoon tea enjoyed by many. Jeff Engel, our Chaplain, was on hand to take some memorable photographs.
Our spring session closes with a visit to Liverpool Cathedral on 25 th June. We are to have a meal followed by a Guided Tour. Very appropriate, in Liverpool 's Capital of Culture year.
Wishing you all Happy Holidays whether at home or abroad .

Mothers' Union
Mothers' Union has had a wonderful start to the year with interesting and varied speakers thoroughly enjoyed by all. Who could not fail to be moved by the wonderful work the Leprosy Mission is doing in India , and to find out that it only costs 50p to cure a leprosy patient for life!
At our last meeting we held a Bible Bring and Buy and a Faith Supper. Despite the terrible weather 22 members managed to attend. Each person brought an item that was mentioned in the Bible and read the relevant verse, for example, bread, wine, honey, apples, salt, fish, grapes and a cucumber! Most members were amazed that a cucumber was mentioned in the Bible but Betty Brown assured us it was and proceeded to read the relevant verse!
We are now looking forward to our April meetings on the 9 th and 23 rd . On the 23 rd we will celebrate St. George's Day.
A big ‘thank you' to my Deputy, Marion Piert, who held the reins whilst I was on my long holiday.
