- 10 - Hammer- Beam Roof |
|---|
The hammer-beam nave roof of 1610 is one of the finest Jacobean 'black
and white' roofs in Lancashire. It was described by the North West
Civic Trust as 'one of the last examples of true Gothic
architecture in England before it was superseded by the Renaissance
style'.
On a beam on the north side of the roof is carved the inscription
'Thomas Bold, knight, 1610' and 'Lady Brigid Bold, his wife', while on
the south are the arms of the Ogle family. These inscriptions stand
directly above the original sites of those families' pews.
